I was reminded by this blog post about the subtle influence of porn on our society. It creeps in so quietly and before you realise its there and so difficult to get rid of. For me, magazines and newspapers are the worst and most subtle. Whats the deal with being able to show a naked woman and make it acceptable by just not showing nipples? I have become increasingly alarmed by the offerings of DVDs at Blockbusters. Right next to a family film you now have soft core porn (at least I’m presuming its soft … whatever that means anyway). And now its just there and what are we doing about it? Its all so subtle that now it feels I am just waking up and going “what the heck?!!” and wondering what I can do about it.
*Added 7 Aug 06 - After my complaint to Blockbuster, this was the reply I got:
I would like to apologise on behalf of Blockbuster for any upset that may have been caused by this matter. I can confirm that Blockbuster do stock films which may contain adult material but none of these titles contain any explicit or illegal scenes and all films have been passed by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC).
Due to customer feedback a decision has been taken not to create a separate section but to locate them in loose alphabetical order around the New Release Wall. All stores have also been asked to display these titles above the eye level of small children and next to titles of a similar age restriction.
We are also always working closely with suppliers to “tone down” the sleeves where appropriate and our merchandising principles are subject to ongoing review.
